Asylum seekers, refugees & other pupils new to UK

Advisory work with schools

The Coordinator for asylum-seeker, refugee and other pupils new to the UK can work will schools to build their capacity to work with asylum-seeker, refugee and other pupils new to the UK by

  • Providing training and regular information to school staff
  • Working with senior leadership on reflecting the school's work with asylum seekers, refugees and other pupils new to the UK in the SEF
  • Working with school staff to ensure the curriculum reflects issues such as Human Rights, asylum and migration and assisting with resources
  • Coordinating Refugee Week across Luton schools
  • Providing advice and practical support for asylum seekers, refugees and other pupils new to the UK with particular issues e.g. immigration cases
  • Assisting school with PEPs for Children in Care
  • Attending School Liaison Meetings and other meetings when necessary
  • Accessing interpreters/translators when required for parental liaison, home language assessments, GCSE in minority languages, pre-SATs
  • Assisting schools collate their perceived numbers of asylum seekers, refugees and EU pupils on roll (bi-annually)
  • Informing schools of supplementary schools appropriate for their pupils

Work with families/carers
The Coordinator for refugees, asylum-seekers and other pupils new to the UK works with families, carers and residential settings to

  • Secure pre-school, school and college places
  • Access and liaise with appropriate professional support agencies, including social services, locally and nationally
  • Inform them of opportunities within the local
  • Facilitate access to interpreters as required
  • Facilitate liaison between home and pre-school, school and college
