Public Sector Equality Duty

Equality Act 2010- supersedes all previous equality legislation

People’s 9 protected characteristics:

  • race, gender and disability (as before)
  • sexual orientation
  • religion or belief
  • gender reassignment
  • pregnancy and maternity 
  • marriage and civil partnership (only re employment in schools/academies)
  • age (only re employment for schools/academies)

General Duties on public bodies, including schools and academies since April 2011, to have a due regard to:

  • eliminate discrimination
  • advance equality of opportunity
  • foster good relations

Specific Duties on schools and academies

  • publication of Equality data annually from April 2012
  • publish equality objectives every four years (policies and schemes no longer required) from April 2012
