elearning@luton Film Wins National Award
elearning@luton Film Wins National Award

A film created by the staff at elearning@luton, using facilities available to all Luton schools, has won a national award. "Out Of The Shadows", a homage to gothic silent films, was created by staff members Kevin Dickson, Emma Darcy and Raj Godhaniya to showcase the type of filmmaking that is now possible at elearning@luton. Using the centre's television studio facilities and state of the art Tricaster Vision Mixing System, the film includes flying sequences and scenes set in a variety of  "virtual" locations.

The film was entered for the National Cineclub Awards in the Teachers Film category where it won first prize and a coveted "Silver Star" award. Amongst the judges was Director of Film Education Ian Wall and Assistant Editor of Empire film magazine Ian Freer. As well as the Silver Star, the elearning@luton team also won an official Empire review of their film.

The ceremony took place at the BFI Southbank on 14th July and was attended by over fifty pupils from a variety of Luton primary and secondary schools. The pupils had recently completed a year long Cineclub filmmaking course, either in their own school or at elearning@luton, and four of the films they had produced were also shortlisted for national Cineclub awards.

Over the past year, the television studio at elearning@luton has been utilised by hundreds of learners, including pupils from Gill Blowers Nursery School, Luton Sixth Form College, The Orchard Centre and many Luton primary and secondary schools. The studio has also been used for Teacher Training by the University Of Bedfordshire and has supported both the Luton ICT Conference and the Luton Headteachers Conference.
