Ethnic Minority Achievement (EMA)

Luton is a diverse and vibrant town with over 66% of its pupils coming from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds and with 43% of its pupils having English as an additional language. One hundred and twenty two languages (2009) are spoken.

Historically the town has welcomed many families from the Indian Subcontinent and the Caribbean. Over the years asylum seekers and refugees have sought safety locally and most recently families from the European Union, particularly from Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary and Romania have made Luton their home. There are also Gypsy, Roma and Traveller families.

The Equality and Diversity Team works with schools, families and agencies to increase the access to education of asylum seekers, refugees and Gypsy, Roma and Travellers.

To contact the team please phone 01582 538205.
This is a core service to Luton schools and a traded service to academies.

The Support, Challenge and Intervention Consultant for English as an Additional Language (EAL) is available to support whole school development through traded services.

For further information please phone 01582 548020.
