Community Cohesion Education Standards for Schools

The Education and Inspections Act 2006 introduced a duty on all maintained schools in England to promote community cohesion, and on Ofsted to report on the contributions made in this area from September 2008. Schools must contribute to community cohesion through their approach to:

  • teaching and learning and the curriculum: promoting discussion and common values and diversity
  • equity and excellence: ensuring equal opportunities for all pupils to succeed at the highest level possible, by removing barriers to access and participation
  • engagement and ethos: providing opportunities to interact and build links with parents, communities and other schools locally, nationally and internationally
